Sunday saw a sensational win for Julia Görges in a fantastic final at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. In a nail biting match, the 22-year-old German defeated Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, 7-6 (3), 6-3 in front of a full house at Stuttgart’s Porsche Arena. The well-earned reward for her biggest career success is $110,210 and a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet.
“I had goose pimples on match point. It was an unbelievable feeling playing the final with so many people watching,” said Julia Görges.
“Everything was going so well but you can never be sure against Caroline. She never gives up and has turned lots of matches around when nobody expected her to. She’s only beaten when the last point is over.” Along with her first drive in her new Porsche she said she was looking forward to two things: “My niece’s baptism on Monday and being able to sleep in my own bed again after three months on the tour.”
Görges who beat two Top 10 players – Victoria Azarenka and Samantha Stosur – enroute to the final, maintained a high level for the whole of the match. She won the first set on a tie-break and quickly went 3-0 up in the second. She eventually closed out the match on her third match point to win her second WTA title. Her winning performance at Stuttgart has enabled her to break into the Top 30 for the first time and she’ll be ranked 27th when the new world rankings are released on Monday.
Runner up Wozniacki said: “I played well but Julia was simply better. I’d like to congratulate her on her win.
“At the start of both sets I had a few break chances but I couldn’t take them. But I had a good tournament. Of course I’d love to have won the Porsche. I’ll just have to try again next year.”
There was also a German win in the doubles as Sabine Lisicki and partner Samantha Stosur won the final 6-1, 7-6 (5) against local heroes Kristina Barrois and Jasmin Wöhr. It was Lisicki’s first ever doubles titles on the WTA Tour.
