The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix has it's dream final as Julia Görges and Caroline Wozniacki are set to face each other on Sunday in the Porsche Arena. Julia Görges is the first German to reach the final since Anke Huber in 1996. It will also be the Danish, world No. 1’s first appearance in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
Caroline Wozniacki has already won three tournaments this year in Dubai, Indian Wells and Charleston and made her way to the final as a firm favourite. But her opponent’s route to the title match was very different. Julia Görges, the world No. 32, sensationally beat last year’s runner-up Samantha Stosur 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The No. 7 seed, from Brisbane was the favourite but was undone by the tenacity and fighting spirit of Julia Görges.
“I’m just so happy,” said the winner with a big smile on her face. “It was one of the best matches of my career.” The 22-year-old shed a few tears after her sensational win. “Amazing – I played a very good match. Samantha too. She played at the same level as at last year’s French Open,” she said.
World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki beat the Polish player Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-3 in the second semifinal on Saturday.
“It was a very tough match for me. Agnieszka put me under pressure the whole time and played some great shots.” She will go into the final full of respect for Görges: “I’ve already played Julia and she was once up in the third set against me – I know how dangerous she is and she’s got some good shots on her.”
There were also German successes in the doubles as Kristina Barrois and Jasmin Wöhr, who both play for the local TEC Waldau Stuttgart club, reached the finals after their 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 win against the Hungarian Katalin Marosi and Kathrin Wörle (Germany). They will meet Sabine Lisicki and Samantha Stosur, who beat Vitalia Diatchenko (Russia) and Mariya Koryttseva (Ukraine) 6-2, 6-4.
