Plenty of movement as latest junior and youth world rankings released
Lausanne, Switzerland, May 11, 2011 – Brazil remain on top of the junior women’s volleyball world after the FIVB released the latest world rankings on Wednesday following the conclusion of all continental qualifiers for the 2011 FIVB Youth and Junior World Championships.
The women’s table sees the most surprising changes with USA rocketing seven places up to second following their victory in both the NORCECA Women’s Junior and Girls’ Youth Championship and Peru climbing five places to third after picking up bronze in the CSV Girls’ Youth Continental Cup and at last year’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
Japan also shift up the rankings to fourth from sixth while Turkey remain in fifth. The Dominican Republic, Germany and Serbia all fall three places to sixth, seventh and eighth respectively with Belgium also sitting in seventh having dropped down from second. Algeria, Korea and Argentina all moved into the top 20 as all teams in the ranking, with the exception of world No.1 Brazil, Turkey and Puerto Rico, either moved up or down the table.
The new rankings are released as youth and junior teams around the world prepare for the World Championships later this year. This begins with the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship in Peru from July 22 to 31 before moving onto the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Junior World Championship in Brazil from August 1 to 10, the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ Youth World Championship in Turkey from August 12 to 21 and finally the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship in Argentina from August 19 to 28.
