Even the world's best discus exponent can have problems and Sandra Perkovic has been undergoing treatment for pain in the peritoneum. Treatment has been taking place at a clinic in Pula, but the pain does not appear to have stopped her training.
That is just as well because on Friday 6 September she will confront the Moscow silver medallist, Mélina Robert-Michon, in the Brussels Golden League Final for a rematch to bring down the curtain on the season.
"I started feeling the pain in the peritoneum after the World championships," explained Perkovic. "I reduced the intensity of training for a while thinking the pain would subside, but unfortunately it worsened."
There is some consolation for her troubles since she subsequently threw a personal best at training camp in Medulin with the 2kg discus so the discomfort does not appear to have phased her too much.
Perkovic lifted the European junior title in 2009, became the youngest winner of the senior European championships in 2010. In 2012, she became European champion for the second time before lifting the Olympic crown.
