Keri-anne Payne smashed the British Record in the women's 1500m Freestyle taking eight seconds off the previous time. She then returned to the water for the semi final of the 200m Freestyle on the third day of the British Gas Swimming Championships.
Payne led from the gun and was two seconds up after 100m and built on that lead stroke by stroke.
She steadied her stroke and then continued to push ahead and with just 300m to go she held a seven second lead over the field.
The Olympic silver medallist won the gold with the new British Record time of 16:06.67.
"I kind of had the record in mind but didn't think I was going to go that far under it," Payne said.
"I was fine with lane one in the final. My coach said to go 17 minute for the final and I just did that. It was so nice that every single person on poolside was waving me on and supporting me
"I'm now looking for a good 800 and hopefully a PB to get qualification for the world qualifier.
A fantastic swim from City of Sheffield's Eleanor Faulkner saw her take the silver in a sprint finish just ahead of Cassie Patten who took bronze. Faulkner touched in a time of 16:15.29 and Cassie Patten finished in 16:15.33.
The women's 100m Backstroke battle lived up to expectations with Gemma Spofforth taking on Lizzie Simmonds to take the title.
Simmonds led at the turn but Spofforth showed why she was World Champion and powered through the last 50m pulling away with 25m to win in a time of 1.00.52. Simmonds took silver in 1.01.16 and Loughborough University's Rachel Lefley just pipped Georgia Davies to the bronze after finishing in 1:02.02.
Rebecca Adlington qualified for the 200m Freestyle final after finishing in the fastest time in tonight's semi final, closely followed by Jazz Carlin, Jo Jackson and Hannah Miley. Keri-anne Payne made an immense recovery to book her place in tomorrow's final less than an hour after her record breaking win in the 1500m.
