ParalympicsGB was jointly awarded Outstanding Contribution to British Sport alongside TeamGB at the prestigious Sport Industry Awards, held yesterday evening (Thursday April 30, 2009) at the Battersea Evolution.
The award celebrated both Paralympic and Olympic success at the Beijing Games.
“We are delighted that the hard work and success of our many Paralympians has been recognised by the Sport Industry Awards”, said Chief Executive Phil Lane.
Double Paralympic gold medallist Jody Cundy received the award on behalf of ParalympicsGB.
ParalympicsGB’s ‘Superheroes’ advert had also been shortlisted for the Best TV Sport Commercial at the Awards.
The Superheroes advert was a collaboration between ParalympicsGB, BT, who are a sponsor of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Sir Paul McCartney.
“It is a great honour for ParalympicsGB that we were shortlisted for this award”, said Lane. “We are extremely proud of the advert, which illustrates and celebrates the fact that our Paralympians are inspirational individuals who achieve great success.”
The advert features Sir Paul McCartney’s classic song ‘Live and Let Die’. The former Beatle was inspired to support ParalympicsGB after meeting para-equestrian rider Sophie Christiansen, who went on to win two gold medals at last summer’s Paralympic Games in Beijing.
The Best TV Sport Commercial Award eventually went to Nike.

The Sport Industry Awards are one of the largest and most prestigious commercial sport awards in Europe. The Awards are given each year in recognition of excellence in the marketing, PR, sponsorship, new media, publishing, advertising and design areas of sport business.
Amongst the guests invited by the organisers last night were several Paralympians, including Liz Johnson, who won a Paralympic gold medal in Beijing and who also features in the advert.
