Great Britain women’s wheelchair basketball team got their Paralympic World Cup campaign off to the perfect start on Day One.
The British team, who narrowly missed out on netting a bronze medal at last years games, secured a convincing 51-44 victory over Brazil.
The British team took control early on, winning the first quarter 14-4 but were pushed hard in the fourth as Juciliene Moraes, who top scored with 19 points, and Cleonete Santos kept Brazil in the game.
British veteran Ann Wild contributed nine points to Team GB’s haul and insisted it was important to start the competition with a win.
She said: “It is great to get a win in our opening match but Brazil gave us a real examination. We had a really good collective unit out there and stuck to the plan.
“If we continue to improve then I believe we will do well this week.”
Meanwhile the Netherlands, making their debut in the competition, registered a comprehensive 52-41 victory over China.
Elsbeth Van Oostrom ran the show for the Dutch scoring 29 points with Yang Chao keeping the Chinese team in touching distance tallying 10 points.
