Oregon State Wins 2011 PAC 10 Gymnastics Championship
The Beavers were the only top-25 nationally-ranked team in the tournament to post a season-high score. The sixth-ranked UCLA Bruins total of 196.750 was seven tenths below their season-high but was sufficient for second place. Third place was taken by the seventeenth-ranked Washington Beavers who were a mere five hundredths off their season-best. The most disappointing performance was the 195.975 aggregate achieved by the third-ranked Stanford Cardinal whose season average was over six tenths higher and top score was a full point higher. Stanford's below par performance earned them fourth place.
Oregon State did not win first place in all the individual events but they were the most consistent team by far. PAC-10 Freshman of the Year, Olivia Courtney of UCLA won the vault with a score of 9.950. Oregon State's Kelsi Blalock and Britney Ranzy tied for second with 9.900.
There were six gymnasts tied for first in the uneven parallel bars- three from Oregon State (Makayla Stambaugh, Leslie Mak and Olivia Vivian), two from UCLA (Olivia Courtney and Aisha Gerber) and Washington's Samantha Walior. The winning bars score was 9.900.
Stanford's Ashley Morgan and UCLA's Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs tied for first in the floor exercise with 9.900 followed by Oregon State's Makayla Stambaugh and UCLA's Sydney Sawa with 9.875 each.
The balance beam was won by Beaver Leslie Mak with 9.950. Teammate Olivia Vivian's 9.900 was sufficient for of a three-way tie for second with Arizona's Katie Matusik and Washington's Aliza Vaccher.
The all around was dominated by the Beavers Leslie Mak (first place, 39.525), Makayla Stambaugh (second place, 39.400) and Kelsi Blalock (third place tie with UCLA's Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs, 39.300).
This is the best time of the year any team to be at their peak. On April 2, 2011, the regional competitions will determine which teams compete for the 2011 NCAA Championship, April 15-17 in Cleveland, Ohio.
