NSW’s midcourt dominated the final, feeding their shooters Chelsea Pittman and Erin Bell with 63 possessions inside the circle to Victoria’s combined 45 attempts. But NSW struggled to lift their shooting percentage above low 70s as the pressure built, opening the door for Victoria.
A three-goal first quarter lead, 14-11 by NSW was quickly whittled away by a resurgent Victoria in the second quarter and the Victorians led by one at half time, 23-22. With just one goal separating the arch rivals at three quarter time – Victoria led 32-31 - fans relished the tense, enthralling finish to a quality competition featuring the emerging stars of the sport.
Victoria brought on Tegan Caldwell at GA for the final term and she answered the challenge shooting 3 from 3, but possession was hard to come by with NSW’s mid courters in great form.
With 10 seconds to play, young Victorian GS, Kathleen Knott missed a chance to tie the scores and NSW celebrated their second underage national title for 2008, adding the 21/U title to their earlier victory in the 19/U division.
