The 19-year-old from Derby, who plays at Chevin, shares seventh place and is just four shots off the lead set by Linda Wessberg of Sweden.
Melissa, who is representing the English Ladies’ Golf Association in the event, had three birdies on her outward nine, at the 6th, 7th and 9th. She dropped just one shot all day, on the par five 16th.
Already this season Melissa has won the Scottish strokeplay championship and the St Rule Trophy.
English champion Naomi Edwards (Ganton), who is also representing ELGA, had a disappointing finish to her round with bogeys on three of the last four holes.
Naomi, 24, from Scarborough, had played steadily until then, with a birdie on the first, a bogey on the second and a string of pars. She closed with a three over par 75, sharing 59th place.
