Malta has introduced Wheelchair Rugby League and yesterday saw the Knights take out the inaugural Wheelchair Rugby League Challenge at St Martin’s College.
Malta Rugby League (MRL) joined the Inspire organisation and men’s and ladies teams from Kavallieri Rugby Football Club for the event that included able and non-able bodied athletes.
The Knights progressed to the final after finishing their group matches undefeated and they met Kavallieri Mens in the decider, Inspire beating Kavallieri Ladies for third place.
In the Grand Final, on a slippery surface, a brace of tries by Graham Attard gave Kavallieri Mens one hand on the Shield but Daniel Grima and Anthony Micallef drew the game level before sending it into extra time.
In golden point extra-time, Kristin Baldacchino sent Daniel Grima over to score in the corner for the Knights to triumph.
The event was supported by Red Bull (beverages), Maxim Sports Nutrition (energy bars), Try Tag Rugby (tags – www.trytagrugby.com), Matthew Scerri (photography – www.matthewscerri.com) and St Martin’s College (venue).
The MRL and Inspire are accepting teams for the next event. For more information, visit www.malteserugbyleague.com
