Malaysia favoured for Badminton Gold

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa battled past Singapore’s Sari Shanti Mulia and Yao Lei, becoming India's first Women's Doubles pair to win the Gold medal in Badminton.

Second seed Jwala-Ashwini outplayed top seed Shanti-Lei 21-16, 21-19.

Jwala-Ashwini’s game was a perfect blend of attack and defence, which surpassed the Singaporean duo in front of a packed crowd at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.

In a battle of smashes, the Indian pair had the last laugh as they combined power with deft net play, notching up their biggest win together.

Trailing 0-3 in the first game, the Indian duo fought hard to draw level at 5-5, before moving ahead with a smash from Jwala.

The second game saw similar action as the Indians were trailing at 12-15 but Jwala-Ashwini used drops and smashes to wrest the lead, wrapping up the match in India's favour. -PTI
