Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa battled past Singapore’s Sari Shanti Mulia and Yao Lei, becoming India's first Women's Doubles pair to win the Gold medal in Badminton.
Second seed Jwala-Ashwini outplayed top seed Shanti-Lei 21-16, 21-19.
Jwala-Ashwini’s game was a perfect blend of attack and defence, which surpassed the Singaporean duo in front of a packed crowd at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.
In a battle of smashes, the Indian pair had the last laugh as they combined power with deft net play, notching up their biggest win together.
Trailing 0-3 in the first game, the Indian duo fought hard to draw level at 5-5, before moving ahead with a smash from Jwala.
The second game saw similar action as the Indians were trailing at 12-15 but Jwala-Ashwini used drops and smashes to wrest the lead, wrapping up the match in India's favour. -PTI
