Linda CREEMERS, who negotiated two days of qualification, stole the show on the fourth day of play, Saturday 10th July 2010, at the Egypt Open in Cairo. She beat top seed, Japan's Sayaka HIRANO, in the second round of proceedings before maintaining her good form to defeat the vastly experienced NI Xia Lian of Luxembourg in the quarter-finals.
Both Sayaka HIRANO and NI Xia Lian are players of note; the former won the Women's Singles crown at the Indian Open in June, whilst Ni Xia Lian is vastly experienced. She first entered the ITTF Women's World Rankings in 1983 and in both 1988 and 2002 was crowned European champion.
The successes of Linda CREEMERS were major upsets in the Women's Singles event and there was one more; Hong Kong's ZHANG Rui, the no.7 seed, ousted Romania's Elizabeta SAMARA, the no.2 seed, in the semi-finals. Defeats for the top two seeds but success for the no.3 and no.4 seeds; Turkey's HU Melek and Japan's Yuka ISHIGAKI duly progressed to the semi-final stage; in the round of the last eight, HU Melek defeated Japan's Reiko HIURA, Yuka ISHIGAKI ousted LIN Ling of Hong Kong.
