Lexi Thompson Building Towards Next Major Title

After a second-place finish in the Women’s PGA Championship earlier this year, there are signs another LPGA major title could be just around the corner for Lexi Thompson.

The Florida star landed her first and only major title to date at the Chevron Championship back in 2014 but Thompson is showing promise that a second major crown could be on the horizon.

Thompson Can Build On Congressional Disappointment

Finishing tied for second and just one shot behind South Korean winner Chun In-gee, Thompson might well have been thinking of what might have been at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship back in June. Thompson, who is often seen as a contender in the odds when you bet on golf for the majors, impressed for the most part at the tournament at the Congressional Country Club.

Despite her efforts, the 27-year-old, who should be in the mix when it comes to golf betting predictions for 2023, had to settle for second after bogeying four of the last seven holes. Up to that disappointing end, it was still a good performance from Thompson who has been showing signs in recent years that she can win another major title.

Prior to the events at Congressional, Thompson also managed to finish tied for second at the US Women’s Open in 2019, as another South Korean in the form of Lee Jeong-eun claimed the big prize. This time it was two shots that Thompson was off the pace, in another confidence-boosting performance for the American. Ultimately it was a final round of 73 that cost her at the Country Club of Charlestown, but it was a more valuable experience gained in South Carolina.

An Exciting 2023 Ahead

Thompson has a rigorous training routine throughout most of the year, which has helped her climb back into the top 10 in the women’s world rankings. Practicing takes up to five hours a day, with two hours solely dedicated to putting. It’s not just on the fairways and the greens that Thompson spends her time but she also has one to two hours in the gym to keep in the best possible shape for the rigors of the LPGA Tour.

With Thompson admitting it’s rare she has any days off, she certainly is showing the level of dedication needed to claim another major. The women’s game has gone to new levels in terms of competitiveness, especially with top players emerging from Asia over the last decade. Thompson won her only major at the Chevron Championship at Mission Hills Country Club at Rancho Mirage, California. Winning the tournament by three shots ahead of fellow American star Michelle Wie, was a performance that really put Thompson’s name on the map.

It’s clear Thompson still has the hunger and the drive to get back to the golf that would see her add to her sole major. With that in mind, it looks like 2023 could be a very exciting year for this icon of women’s golf in the US.
