Leisel Jones, the breaststroke ‘queen’

Lausanne (SUI), November 4, 2007 – Leisel Jones, the Australian champion, was the brightest star at the third leg of the 2007 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Sydney (AUS), held on November 2-3, by establishing two new records of the competition in the women’s 50m and 100m breaststroke. In the shorter distance, Jones clocked 30.03, while in the 100m she finished first in 1:04.37. This last result was the second best performance of the meet in the women’s field, behind Lisbeth Lenton, also from Australia, who swam the 50m butterfly in 25.56.

In terms of victories in Sydney, Lenton got four gold medals and Jones triumphed in the three breaststroke events.


In the general ranking of the World Cup, and before the European legs In the women’s classification, Natalie Coughlin (USA) is the provisional leader with 70 points, in front of Therese Alshammar (SWE, 40) and Lisbeth Lenton (AUS, 25).

 

The meet schedule is as follows:
• October 19-20 in Durban (RSA)
• October 27-28 in Singapore (SIN)
• November 2-3 in Sydney (AUS)
• November 9-10 in Moscow (RUS)
• November 13-14 in Stockholm (SWE)
• November 17-18 in Berlin (GER)
• November 23-25 in Belo Horizonte (BRA).
