BOURGES (EuroLeague Women/EuroBasket Women) - There is no better time than the present for women’s basketball in Great Britain to receive a shot in the arm, with UK Sport announcing in December that it will not fund basketball for the four-year Olympic cycle leading up to the Rio de Janeiro Games.
Both the men and women are looking to prove their worth to potential sponsors.
Johannah Leedham has just reminded everyone there is talent in the women’s game in the country by signing for French giants Bourges.
The joint-leading scorer (with Brazil center Erika de Souza) at the London Games with an average of 16.2 points per game, Leedham has revealed via Twitter that she has joined the defending French champions Bourges for the remainder of the season.
She tweeted: "Pleased to say ill be finishing this season with bourges basket in french and euroleague.. So thankful for this opportunity."
Bourges had a position to fill in the backcourt with Sweden international Frida Eldebrink forced to undergo wrist surgery.
The club is second in Group A of the EuroLeague Women behind Sparta&K Moscow Region.
This will not be the first time that 25-year-old Leedham has competed in the EuroLeague Women.
She played in nine games in 2011 with Polish outfit Gorzow.
The Brits lost all five of their games at the Olympics, although they were competitive in each of their clashes.
One of the teams to beat them was France, who won when Bourges point guard Celine Dumerc hit a three-ball at the end of overtime.
They will take on Serbia, Latvia and France in Group C of the EuroBasket Women, which tips of on 15 June and serves as a qualifying event for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.
