Ten of the nation’s finest gymnasts, including four current Australian champions, will compete in Gwangju, Korea this July, with Gymnastics Australia today confirming the Australian gymnastics team bound for the 28th Summer Universiade.
The five-star line up will be led by 2010 world floor champion Lauren Mitchell (Curtin University) who will continue her comeback en route to the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The 23-year-old returned to competition last month for the first time since injuring both ankles just days before the 2014 world championships in China, and proved she still has what it takes with an Australian title on floor and an impressive performance on beam.
Mitchell has recently confirmed she will seek qualification for what would be her third Olympics.
Joining her in Korea will be fellow 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medal winning team members Georgia-Rose Brown (RMIT) and Mary-Anne Monckton (Australian Catholic University), both of whom will also make their return from injury.
23-year-old Enid Sung (University of Sydney) is Australia’s mainstay in rhythmic gymnastics, as she embarks on her second trip to the World University Games.
Sung suffered a server shoulder injury in 2014 and spent a year away from competition as a result, but is now primed for medal contention in Gwangju as demonstrated by her good form at the recent national championships.
The 2015 World University Games will begin on July 3 and run until July 14, information about the event can be found here: http://www.gwangju2015.com/
