| Brisbane-Unbeaten Balmain needed a late penalty goal to seal a 7-all draw with Brisbane Barracudas women in a National Water Polo League match at Musgrave Park Pool yesterday. Sydney Olympic champion Taryn Woods, the winner of the last two most-valuable-player awards in the NWPL, slotted the penalty goal after leading for much of the match but giving away the lead a few minutes earlier. Balmain made heavy weather of the match, converting just one from nine on extra-man attack as the Barracudas defended stoutly. Balmain has five wins and a draw from the opening fortnight. Balmain men won in a canter over Brisbane with Chris Dyson, Tim Hamill and triple Olympian Gavin Woods scoring four each in the 16-8 victory. In Adelaide, host Adelaide Jets snared one of their most impressive results for some time with a 10-all draw against reigning premiers Wests Magpies but it could have been a win. Each quarter was squared with the Jets leading six times to Wests’ four but the final nail came from Wests’ Peter De Gail, who grabbed the equaliser just six seconds from full time. National junior representative Sarah Grunberger scored a hat-trick in the final quarter to steer the University of New South Wales Killer Whales to a 9-7 victory over the Adelaide Jets after the game was locked at 5-all heading into the final quarter. In Newcastle, the Hunter Hurricanes men beat Cronulla Sharks 15-7 while Cronulla’s women won 8-4. |
