LAT EuroBasket – No Latvia return for Jekabsone-Zogota in 2011
RIGA (EuroBasket Women 2011) – Latvia will not have their 2007 FIBA Europe Women’s Player of the Year, Anete Jekabsone-Zogota, in the line-up come June when the national team tries to qualify for the London Olympics.
The Fenerbahce guard has announced she will not play for the national team for the second consecutive summer.
"Concerning the European Championship Finals this summer, I had a very difficult decision, which was taken with my family,” Jekabsone announced in stories running on the Sportacentrs.com and Parsportu.lv websites.
“My body needs a break. At some point, every athlete feels it.
“I hope that both fans and the basketball community respect this decision.
“This is not the end of my career with the national team."
Jekabsone did not play last year when the Baltic side, under Greek coach George Dikeoulakos, overcame a difficult start to qualify for the Final Round.
Latvia will face Greece, France and Croatia in Group D of the EuroBasket Women in Poland.
