Cycle racing marathon and training camp all in one
Las Palmas ? The date for the first run of the racing marathon Cycling
Challenge in Gran Canaria has been set. On Friday the 25th of March
2011, tourism expert and marathon organizer Petra Wonisch and her team
will send cyclists from all over the world on one of the most
beautiful scenic marathon tracks of Europe.

?The 85 km marathon track starts at the Parque del Sur in Maspalomas
passing through Fataga until St. Bartolomé, full of fascinating
landscape, breathtaking runs and steep slopes?, says Petra Wonisch,
?and from there to St. Lucia and on the rural road along the sea
towards Vecindario, and eventually back to our party at the Parque del
Sur in Maspalomas.? This summer, the Canarian cycle racing
championship took place on this track? just a test run for the
international elite and ambitious amateur cyclists.
The Cycling Challenge of Gran Canaria offers as its peak a week-long
training camp for experts and amateur cyclists as the first test of
strength of the season. As well as in the past, state champions and
other international elite cyclists are expected. If you have to put
the hospitality, professionalism and concern of Gran Canaria?s
bike-tourism expert, Petra Wonisch, all in one word, you will consider
?comprehensive-complete-package? to be the most adequate. Every
cyclist will feel they are in good hands. ?People realize, the moment
they arrive, that we are taking care of them and that someone is
catering for their needs,? says the Canary-Bike.com owner. ?That?s the
reason they like to come back and bring their family and friends the
next time.
Our philosophy for the premiere 2011 is ?The Best of Everything?. We
want to offer our participants the most beautiful track, the best food
and the greatest party. All guests of the event centre and bike hotel
San Agustin obtain priority at the start positions and will thus have
a considerable advantage. Subscription starts for hotel guests on the
1st of November.
The already established marathon run ?Challenge-Canarias? celebrates
its peak and final event in Gran Canaria. So, the attractive trophy
money will also be a special attraction at our victory celebration.
Other races will take place from January till March at Lanzarote,
Fuerteventura, La Palma and most likely at La Gomera or Tenerife. More
details soon.
At the Cycling Challenge Gran Canaria 2011, we will hand out the
Fabian Wonisch Trophy, a special issue for the host and for the
?Amigos del Ciclismo?, and an encouragement to promote youth education
and road safety. The trophy is given in memory of the enthusiastic
cyclist son of Petra Wonisch, who died in 2005 at a tragic road
accident. After her son?s death, Petra Wonisch established a
foundation, which visits schools in Gran Canaria and approaches
children towards cycling and road safety. The host is pleased with
each contribution for the foundation like tricots, helmets and gloves.
Thanks to the past donation the bike school was able to gather the
entire basic equipment.
Our first edition of the cycle racing marathon Cycling Challenge Gran
Canaria on the 25th and 26th of March will include international
participants - cyclists from 18 different countries have already
registered. The main concern of the European and American bike-press
is specially focused on the Charity-Programme, Women's Marathon MTB in
solidarity with the Association Against Breast Cancer, in which 200
female participants are estimated to participate. Men can also take
part, since there will be a local sale of T-Shirts to raise revenue
for the association.
Prizes, both cash and non-cash, and tombola, with the total value of
10.000 euros, will be distributed between our participants on that
weekend. On Saturday the MTB Marathon Open MTB will take place for the
seventh time. So we will expect a total of 1000 active participants at
our ?bike-fiesta? this weekend at the Parque del Sur in Maspalomas.
