Kerry Smith’s Spanish challenge ends in quarter-finals
Kerry, 36, from Waterlooville in Hampshire, was beaten 5/4 by Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall.
Earlier, Kerry had notched up two convincing wins, beating Scotland’s Kylie Walker 6/5 in the first round and then defeating Isabelle Boineau of France 3/2.
Three other English players reached the matchplay stages of the championships. Sian James, from Bristol and Clifton, scored a one-up win over Belgium’s Laura Gonzalez Escallon before losing 3/2 to Adriana Zwank of Spain.
Rachel Connor, the 17-year-old England girl international from Manchester, also progressed to the second round, defeating Josephine Jansson of Sweden 2/1. Her challenge ended in the second round when she lost by two holes to Audrey Goumard of France.
Holly Aitchison of Bedfordshire, the 2007 Portuguese champion, lost a tight first round tussle with Linda Henriksson of Finland when she was beaten by one hole.
The championship was won by Germany’s Caroline Masson who beat Adriana Zwank of Spain 2/1 in the final.
