Ireland Women begin title defence with a bang

 report by sportsbeat

Ireland, who clinched a first ever Grand Slam 12 months ago, were dominant from the word go and ran in 11 tries in total against Scotland, chalking up the biggest win in their history.

By half-time, Ireland had racked up six tries and had Nora Stapleton's kicking been more accurate they would have already surpassed their record home Six Nations win.

As it was, they led 32-0 at the break as tries from second row Sophie Spence (2), flying winger Alison Miller (2) and one each for Heather O'Brien and Lynn Cantwell put Ireland in complete control.

Spence opened the floodgates on just three minutes and while fly-half Stapleton missed the conversion, Miller crossed after good work from O'Brien at the back of the scrum.

This time Stapleton was on target with the extras and O'Brien turned scorer soon after to dot down in the right-hand corner for 17-0.

Scotland could not build any sort of momentum and while they were afforded possession, Ireland continued to turn it over and it wasn't long before Miller raced clear for her second of the night.

And before the break Ireland were to score two more - first full-back Jackie Shiels brought through the middle before feeding Cantwell and Spence had her second when she finished off an impressive driving maul.

After the break it took Ireland just six minutes to break their home scoring record in the Six Nations as Spence went over for her hat-trick - finishing off after several phases.

Things got worse for Scotland when back row Tess Forsberg was sent to the sin bin on 50 minutes and Ireland had try number eight when prop Ailis Egan scored from another maul.

Hooker Stacey-Lea Kennedy got in on the act soon after and centre Jenny Murphy, assuming the kicking duties, added the conversion to make it 49-0 to Ireland.

And the champions broke the 50-point barrier when Cantwell notched her second try of the match and flanker Claire Molloy went over late on to ensure Ireland broke their national record.
