All but one of the Investec Women's Hockey League Premier Division sides
progressed to the third round of the Investec Women's Cup on Sunday.
Round two's big game saw Sutton Coldfield, second in the Premier Division,
take on Surbiton who are just below them in third.
As expected it was a very close game, but the side with the edge in the
league had the edge in the Cup too as Sutton Coldfield ran out 2-1 winners
after extra time.
Jane Sixsmith had put Sutton Coldfield ahead just before the break but Amy
Bryant pegged the score back for Surbiton on 58 minutes.
Another Premier Division side, Clifton, squeezed their way through the round
with a 3-2 win over Maidenhead thanks to goals from Els Mansell, Liz Sinton
and Izzy Palmer.
Then in the ninth minute of extra time, Vicky Woolford popped up to slot
home a penalty corner to win the game.
There were no real surprises in the second round of the Investec Women's Cup
although there were some massive score lines as the Premier and Conference
sides battled it out with the smaller teams.
The biggest win of the day was the 18-0 demolition that Sevenoaks served up
to Fareham Jet Van Zalen and Lucy Wood both hitting an unprecedented five
goals apiece.
But the Investec Women's Hockey League Conference East side weren't the only
team to reach double figures.
Beeston, who currently occupy the top spot in the Investec Women's Hockey
League Conference North, brought their form into the competition as they
swept aside Norwich City. Sophie Robinson claimed an incredible double
hat-trick, bagging six of her team's goals in a 13-0 drubbing.
There were two 11-0 score lines in the second round, with Bristol Firebrands
and Chelmsford on fire in front of goal.
Firebrands took on Phoenix of Essex and Linda Webb starred, hitting five
goals for the Investec Women's Hockey League Conference West team.
The Bristol side will hope that the confidence boost this win gives them
will be able to help their push up the table from fifth place when they
return to league action.
The other 11-0 win came in the Spalding v Chelmsford match, with visiting
Chelmsford too hot for the home side to handle.
Cat Hales led the scoring, going on to hit three after opening her side's
account after just four minutes.
