INTERNATIONAL WINNING WEEKEND FOR PHILLY FENCERS

The Fencing Academy of Philadelphia is pleased to announce impressive finishes for two of their star athletes, Maia Mei Weintraub and Tristan Szapary. Both started training at the fencing academy in childhood, had impressive competition records as youth, cadet, and junior fencers, and are now members of Princeton’s varsity fencing team as well as continuing to compete in their respective weapons internationally.

Weintraub fenced the Foil World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia, where in the individual event on Friday she tied for 41st among nearly 200 of the most elite women foilists alive today. On Sunday Team USA, composed of Maia, Zander Rhodes, Jacqueline Dubrovich OLY, and Lee Keifer OLY, earned silver in a contest among teams representing 21 nations.

Szapary competed in the Vancouver Épée World Cup in Vancouver, Canada, where he and his teammates placed 12th out of teams from 26 nations on Sunday. The Men’s Épée Team USA includes Szapary, Justin Haddad, Cooper Schumacher, and Yeissir Remirez OLY. In the individual event, which took place on Friday and Saturday, Tristan fenced his way to a three-way tie for 47th, placing him in the upper 25% of the nearly 200 men who competed in this elite international format.

Fencing Academy of Philadelphia was founded in 1989 by Maître d'Armes Mark Masters and Lara Masters, who together have developed four world champions, nationally successful fencers, college fencers, coaches, referees, and countless happy, healthy humans who enjoy fencing. Their dedication to their students, to the sport, to good sportsmanship, and to transformational coaching is respected through the worldwide fencing community.
