At the Cieszyn Ice Rink Sophie Jones (Gillingham) and Richard Sharpe (South Woodham) completed their first international competition with another personal best score in the free dance , finishing in 8th place, with a combined score of 95.99. This result qualifies them to compete in the British Junior Championships in December.
Commenting on their performance Sharpe said:
“That was brilliant, probably one of the best free dances we have ever done. The whole experience has been fantastic”.
Jones added:
“It was really enjoyable out there and it was great to see so many of the British team in the crowd supporting us, it really spurred us on to do well”.
Team GB’s women’s curlers unfortunately lost 9-4 to Denmark in their last match of the round robin stage. That followed a draw short challenge between themselves, Switzerland and Denmark. The Swiss took the automatic place in to the final by less than 1cm. GB will now have a re-match against Denmark in the semi-final tomorrow morning.
Following the match, coach Debbie Knox said:
“It is disappointing to have been so close to getting a spot in the final today but tomorrow we fortunately have another opportunity. After reflection on the game today the women are now all very upbeat about their chances tomorrow and their form this week has shown that tomorrow they have the ability to deliver a gold medal winning performance”.
In the men’s cross country sprint event Callum Smith (Inverurie) finished 44th and William Newman (Huntly) 60th and in the women’s event Deborah May (Huntly) finished 54th and Lauren Spencer (Gloucester) finished 58th.
Tomorrow sees Team GB in action in the following sports:
Cross Country
Deborah May, Lauren Spencer, William Newman and Callum Smith will compete in the mixed relay.
Curling
Both GB teams have semi-final action tomorrow. The women face Denmark and the men face Norway. The winners will proceed in to the finals later in the afternoon against Switzerland.
Figure Skating
Harry Mattick who is currently lying in 13th position will compete in the men’s free programme.
Skiing
Charlie Guest, Alex Tilley and Emily Whitelock will compete in the women’s Giant Slalom which was postponed from today and Ash Hill, Jo Morrison, Alastair Stang and Matt Thompson will go in the men’s Giant Slalom.
