Hope Powell upbeat despite England defeat to Canada

Canada defeated England 2-0 yesterday to advance into the final of the Cyprus Cup where they will face the Netherlands, who thumped Switzerland 6-0 to progress. England will play South Korea on finals day.

CANADA 2-0 ENGLAND

Both England and Canada went into their final group match of the competition with a chance of progressing into the final, with the English needing to win the game.

It was a goal either side of half time, though, that put paid to Hope Powell's side's chances as Canada skipper Christine Sinclair and Brittany Timko wrapped the game up for their side.

Powell's charges were the better side for the first 45 minutes, though, and the England head coach was upbeat over her team's loss, saying: "I was really pleased with our performance.

"Carolina [Morace, Canada's head coach] came up to me afterwards and said ‘football is a cruel game'. They knew we were the better team in the first half.

"It's just that final bit, the finishing. We need to be more clinical in front of goal. The good thing is we are creating the chances and that is really important."

Morace had decided to change around her team's way of playing for the match and was pleased her players adapted to it, saying: "All our players sacrificed to win this match.

"They did exactly what we asked them to do just yesterday [before this match]. It was the first time we played in this new way."

SCOTLAND 0-0 ITALY

Elsewhere, Arsenal's Kim Little missed a penalty as Scotland played out a goalless draw with Italy to finish above England in the group, meaning they face France in Wednesday's finals day.

The Scots have exceeded all expectations, after defeating England 2-0, and will now face yet another European powerhouse in France.

Coach Anna Signeul hailed her players: "Over the past week we've faced some of the top sides in the world. We played very well against Canada and probably should have got a point.

"To get three points against England, what an achievement, and today we did everything except score. If we continue to develop like this, the next few years will be very exciting."
