The English Womens squad made history this weekend taking bronze, in the Samsung FIH World Championship Trophy, Nottingham. This is their first ever medal in the 23 year old history of the event beating World Ranked 4th Germany in convincing style 2-1.
They narrowly missed a place in the final having famously beaten the eventual gold medallists Argentina 2-1, Germany 2-1 and China 2-1 finding a rich vein of form in the earlier pool matches. There failure to see off the wooden spoon specialists , the Kiwis, showed the only lapse of the week meaning they were reliant on China beating Argentina ( who had a higher goal average) to ensure qualification for the final. In a very tight game Argentina just squeezed it against the Chinese coming out on top 3-4.
