GREAT BRITAIN TO HOST ARGENTINA IN MAY

Following the success of the recent Great Britain v Poland Men’s international at Reading, Great Britain Hockey is delighted to announce that hockey fans will have the chance to watch the women’s side at the same venue as they continue their preparation for Olympic Games. Great Britain will take on Argentina at Sonning Lane in two internationals on Monday 12th May and Tuesday 13th May. Both matches will push back at 1900hrs.

The Argentinean women are one of the most attractive sides in the game and are currently ranked No 2 in the World. Their star player, Luciana Aymar, is the current World Hockey Women’s Player of the Year, an award she has also won on three previous occasions. Argentina will be looking to put the final touches to their preparation for the Women’s Champions Trophy in Germany which starts on 17 May.

Great Britain travelled to Argentina in November where they put in some good performances in a five match test series with results including a 3-0 victory for the Brits and a 0-0 draw. They narrowly lost 1-0 on two occasions with the fifth test a close 2-1 defeat.

Sonning Lane is the home of Reading Hockey Club, one of England’s top clubs. They have a history of hosting top internationals and the recent GB v Poland men’s match saw a sell-out 1,250 crowd.

The GB Head coach Danny Kerry is looking forward to the matches “We are delighted to be playing the World Number 2 in our own back yard as we continue our preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games. Unfortunately we will be without some of our Leicester contingent as we have agreed to support them as much as possible in the club European Competition which is over the same time as these matches. Nonetheless we will still get a great deal from these high quality matches and it will provide further opportunity for players to stake their claim when selection is finalised in late June.”

Following the qualification of the men’s side for the Olympics, Great Britain Hockey anticipates announcing details of further matches on home soil involving both teams prior to the departure for Beijing.

Tickets for the matches at Reading will be available from 26 March and will be priced from £4.00. For details see www.greatbritainhockey.co.uk.
