Good start for Jacqueline Silva at Maresia Girls International

Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil (Tuesday, September 21, 2010) – As predicted the waves built up at Praia Mole, a good 3-5 feet mainly lefthanders were at offer for the start of the Maresia Girls International. All 44 surfers that entered in the contest competed today on the round 1 of the ASP Women’s 6-Star held in Florianopolis.
Jacqueline Silva had a very good start in her quest to get a place among the six women’s surfers who make it to the ASP Women’s World Tour next year. She started the heat scoring an 8.0 pts on her first wave to lead the whole heat. On the next round will face Claire Bevilacqua and Bethany Hamilton, two direct contenders for the run to the ASP World Tour; Anali Gomez complete the field of this strong heat.
“I was a bit anxious at the start, competing here at Praia Mole is a lot of pressure, but then I had that 8.0 pts ride which gave me all the confidence that I needed “, said Jacqueline Silva. “From then on all I did was to focus on finishing the heat in first place. The waves are really good today, but due to a strong rip positioning was very difficult”.
She is currently ranked ninth and needs to advance to at least to the sixth position. “With this result I’m already replacing my worst result, but I want to get a good result here to go to Hawaii more comfortably”.
The ones who came were Laura Enever (ranked 2nd), Courtney Conlogue (3), Claire Bevilacqua (5), Alana Blanchard and Cannelle Bullard (6), and all advanced to the next round. As Jacqueline replaces a weak result, she is already in front of Alana and Cannelle in rating.
Alana Blanchard prefers not to think very much about rankings when competing. She advanced wining her heat with fellow Hawaiian Bethany Hamilton in second.
“That was a good heat, there’s a strong rip, but the waves are good and I’m happy to be in the next round”, said Alana who was dividing the 6th place of the WQS. “I rather not to think on this, and just made it through the heats. I prefer to surf with no pressure at all and at the end of the year I’ll the ranking. Besides that the last contest will be in Hawaii, where I live, so let’s keep it rolling”.
