Golden girls close in on another AO trophy

Recently crowned World Championships pairs gold medallist Kelsey Cottrell and Jackaroo captain Lynsey Armitage have booked themselves a berth in the women’s pairs final of the $136,000 Australian Open, after being pushed to near breaking point in today’s semi-final.

The number three seeds had their work cut out for them in the semi-final, challenged all the way to the final bowl in a three-end tie-break by 18 year-old twins from Gin Gin, Bolivia and Cassandra Millerick.

The Millerick sisters had been building a strong reputation for themselves in the tournament; responsible for knocking off world number two Karen Murphy and former Scottish international Kay Moran in the second round earlier this week, but despite a marathon two-and-a-half hour battle, weren’t able to secure a place in the final; going down 8-4, 6-7, 2-1.

The Jackaroo golden girls were hungry to remain in the running for the pairs title after a shock elimination from defending their triples discipline yesterday, but there wasn’t much that separated the two teams on the day.

With the sets split one-apiece, the Millerick’s took control early in the tie-break, picking up the first shot but were outclassed by Armitage and Cottrell, who boast seven Australian Open titles between them, in a nail biting finish that had the capacity crowd on the edge of their seat right up until the last bowl was sent running down the green.

“It’s been a happy hunting ground for both me and Kelso,” Armitage said after advancing.

“We’ve both won a few Australian Open titles here and we’ve got good memories and vibes of Darebin.

“The Millerick girls are definitely two girls on the rise, I’m big fans of them.

“I love coming back here, the crowd and atmosphere are really great, so we’re looking forward to the final.”

Cottrell, despite winning three titles previously, is yet to secure the pairs silverware.

“I’ve won a singles (in 2009) and a triples (in 2011 and 2012), so I’m very keen to win a pairs,” Cottrell said.

Armitage and Cottrell will go up against Queensland duo Carol Williams and Jane Bush, who defeated Echuca’s Veronica Kelly and Melissa Larcombe, 4-11, 7-6, 5-1, in the gold medal decider at 4.00pm on Friday.

The women’s pairs final will be staged at the Darebin International Sports Centre on Friday, February 22, while both men’s and women’s singles semi-finals, and the women’s triples semi-finals, will take place tomorrow.
