Glasgow Wildcats are celebrating their first win of the Co-operative Netball Superleague season after a resounding 53-40 victory at home against Team Northumbria. The Round 5 match was snowed off originally but for Wildcat fans it was well worth waiting for.
Due to the way the fixtures panned out, the Superleague’s bottom side have been playing catch-up with the other teams having missed the double header opening weekend. But it looks as though a run of matches, including the testing work outs against Australia are beginning to help the squad gel.
Wildcats had skipper Lesley MacDonald back under the post for the visit of Team Northumbria, after she narrowly failed a fitness test for the game against Northern Thunder the day before. From the start the Glasgow side had more purpose and were into the fray quicker than they were the day before, starting this game as they finished the last.
An excellent first quarter netted an 11-9 advantage at the break and the second quarter saw the side extend their advantage by another two goals and then their confidence really kicked in. There was a positive mental attitude from the team, and while Northumbria were not playing their best, Wildcats took no prisoners and closed out the match.
Team Northumbria were outplayed in Glasgow, with the Wildcats piling on the pressure as the clock ticked by and were unrelenting until the final whistle when they completed a 53-40 rout.
Glasgow Wildcats head coach Denise Holland: “We built on our powerful finished yesterday playing much more skill and athleticism than our opponents.”
