Girls In Mozambique For The Roxy Invitational Presented By Saltwater GIRL Magazine

Ten of the best female surfers in South Africa are currently in Mozambique and preparing themselves for the start of the inaugural Roxy Invitational, set to take place at one of the fabled right-hand point-breaks in the area.

This ground-breaking and prestigious surf contest, a remote location event for invited girls only, is a first in South Africa and has a R10k first prize, R3k for second place and R2k for third. Forecasts look good for swell in the southern Mozambique area for the rest of the week, and the event is set to be run on the one day of this week when the waves are at their optimum The contest venue is a long and perfect sand bottom point-break, and there will be jet ski assistance for the girls in their heats.

A diverse bunch of invited surfers include the likes of former WCT stalwart Heather Clarke, East London’s on-form Nikita Robb fresh from her win at the recent Roxy Surf Jam, the perennial Michelle Hill of St. Francis who will love the right-handers, Chantelle Rautenbach from Melkbosstrand and young U14 star Heidi Palmboom. Other invited surfers who could make a name for themselves in Mozambique are surfers like Stacy Guy, Tarryn Chudleigh, Sarah Baum and Sarah Maritz.

Danielle le Roux is another surfer who could find form amongst the Mozambican perfection, as could young Kirsty Delport from Durban, as well as East Londoner Telana Flanagan who also loves the right-hand pointbreaks.

“The girls just had an amazing warm up surf. The waves are clean, the water’s so blue, there isn’t a breath of wind and the waves are just running perfectly along the point,” said Quiksilver and Roxy Marketing Manager Dane Patterson from Mozambique today. ”It looked like the swell was pushing a bit as well. The girls were getting such long rides, and it was so much fun out there. If it carries on like this there is a good chance that the event will happen early in the week.”

While the event is a collaboration between Roxy and Saltwater GIRL Magazine, with Saltwater GIRL Magazine being the presenting sponsor, their partnership is supported by Virgin Mobile and Resolution Health. The event is also going to be broadcast on an upcoming episode of Boardriders TV.
