French Mixed Relay Gold at the Junior European Championships
The French pair of Adele Stern and Valentin Belaud have sprinted themselves to the mixed relay gold medal at the Junior European Championships.
Stern and Belaud easily won by 20 seconds over Anastaysia Spas and Yuriy Tkachuk from Ukraine with Volha Papush and Dzianis Zeliankevich beating Great Britain in a sprint for bronze.
Poland represented by Anna Maliszewka and Sebastain Stasiak looked to be headed for the gold medal after the 1st 2 disciplines. However 6 refusals in the riding, meant zero points which ruined their gold medal push.
The golden French pair started off the day in fine fencing form and finished 2nd, just behind the Polish. A less than impressive swim dropped them down the leaders board and then 2 rails down in the riding meant their hopes of securing the dream gold medal was slim. However, fantastic shooting and strong running meant they overtook the British team that started first relatively early in proceedings and they cruised to a very satisfying gold.
