Flawless Argentina, runner-up Venezuela advance at Womens World Championship



Argentina played five matches without dropping a set
Lausanne,  - Argentina and Venezuela emerged from the six-nation South American Pool A tournament in Tortuguitas, Argentina with two berths in the third round of the 2010 FIVB Women's World Championship.

 

An impeccable performance from Argentina left the hosts on top of the standings on 10 points, with Venezuela in second on 9 points.

 

Argentina, which finished the second-round competition without dropping a set, beat Venezuela 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-20) to win the pool on the final day of competition Thursday.

 

Argentine coach Horacio Bastit said he was pleased with the performance of his girls at the tournament, and promised to be even better at the third-round tournament in Brazil in July.

 

"Our goal in this round was fulfilled and we will reach the third round playing at another level after some friendlies and the Pan-American Cup in Miami from June 26 to July 4," Bastit said.

 

Argentina and Venezuela join Brazil and Peru in the next stage, with the first- and second-place finishers moving on to the Final Round of the World Championship scheduled for next fall in Japan.

 

Colombia finished third in Buenos Aires, followed by Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia.

 

Pool A Final Standings:

Argentina 10 pts. (advances to Pool B in Brazil)

Venezuela 9 pts. (advances to Pool B in Brazil)

Colombia 8 pts.

Uruguay 7 pts.

Chile 6 pts.

Bolivia 5 pts.
