Medal winners include 16 year old Sandra Hyslop who won a Gold medal in the women’s K1 (kayak single) classic event. Hyslop, who is Hexham based receives TASS funding (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) raced spectacularly all the way to the finish line.
Also is the classic event, 17 year old Olivia Churchill from London won a Bronze medal in a time of 18m 59s.

In the Sprint event, the girls dominated the competition again. Sandra Hyslop won Silver in a time of 228.95 (just one second behind the winner) and Olivia Churchill won Bronze 231.62.
The women’s K1 team also won a Gold medal, a whole 15 seconds faster (19.10.46) than the German team that came in second place (19.25.66). The team consisted of Sandra Hyslop, Olivia Churchill and Hannah Brown (17 years old).

What is Wild Water Racing?
Wild Water Racing involves racing canoes and kayaks down rapid rivers, it is an exciting and challenging discipline, combining the speed of flatwater racing with the technical aspects of slalom racing. Competitors choose their own route down the river to pick the fastest line. To be successful requires technical ability in reading the river and an efficient paddling style.
At the elite end of the sport, a high level of athleticism and stamina is necessary.
