Estonia wins first World Championship match ever in Tallinn

The Estonian ladies celebrate their win against Georgia
Tallinn, Estonia, 2009 - The Estonian ladies opened their first World Championship campaign ever at the 1st Round Tournament in Tallinn with a clear victory in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-14) against Georgia.

“That was quite a predictable result,“ says the Estonian head coach Peeter Vahtra. “My team is much more experienced and already played at this level. Our services worked well and destroyed Georgia's game. But our next opponent Moldova is of a different class. We have to show a good game, we definitely need another victory to make it to the next round of the Championship”.

There were six players from GMP/Olympic and another one from Viljandi Metall – the two best ladies’ clubs in Estonia – included into the starting line-up of the hosts. Natalia Bratuhhina and Mari-Liis Graumann were the best scorers with 15 and 14 points respectively.

“I felt very confident, because I played almost like for my home club,“ Graumann noticed. “Moldova is the most dangerous opponent we have to face here in Tallinn. They are the typical Eastern European team with very good technical skills”.

In the second game of the day Moldova defeated Denmark also in three sets (25-10, 25-20 and 25-20). “I'm satisfied with the result, but not with the level of our performance. We made too many unforced errors. Our goal is to win this tournament,“ said the head coach of Moldova, Mihail Copilov, after the match.

The winner of this Pool will move to the next round to join the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria and Albania next May.
