The event follows hot on the heels of the World Taekwondo Qualification Event for the Beijing Olympics which was held in Manchester last month, featuring over 300 athletes from more than 100 countries.

The National Championships will be held at the Regional Tennis Centre in Sportcity and will be open to all 15,000 BTCB members and its affiliated groups. The categories will include Child (under 10 years old), Cadets (10-13 years old), Juniors (14-17 years-old) and Seniors with a variety of weight divisions within each category.

The Championships will feature former World Champion Sarah Stevenson (All Stars Taekwondo Club, Doncaster) and rising star Aaron Cook (Scorpion Taekwondo Club, Doncaster), while also giving athletes from all over the country the chance to test their skills against the nation’s best.

Andrew Link, Operations Director Sport Taekwondo UK, said, “The National Championships are the domestic taekwondo highlight of the year and give competitors from all corners of the country the chance to come and see how good they are against their peers.”

Gary Hall Performance Director Sport Taekwondo UK “Having recently held the largest ever Olympic Qualification Event in Manchester, taekwondo has never enjoyed such a high profile in this country and the Nationals are set to be one of the largest we’ve ever staged. We have an Elite National Academy which trains on a full time basis in Manchester and these championships will give our coaching staff an ideal opportunity to review up and coming players and a chance for these players to showcase their skills and be considered for the academy.”

Councillor Mike Kane, Manchester City Council’s Executive member for Arts and Leisure, said: “We are please to welcome taekwondo fans back to Manchester so soon after their very successful event last month. This latest event helps build on the city’s reputation as THE place for top class sport.”
