England’s under 18 side contested the bronze medal playoff at the weekend with the girls beating Belgium to clinch third place at their EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships thanks to goals from Becky Dru and Alice Sharp in Nivelles, Belgium.
In Germany, the U16 girls lost twice to Germany’s under 16s in a three match series with the second match having to be abandoned after just six minutes when the pitch flooded in torrential rain.
The U16s are currently preparing for the Home Nations tournament at Inverclyde in Scotland from 22-24 July.

England’s U18 girls were undone by the penalty corner prowess of the Netherlands in the semi finals of the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships.
The Dutch started off strongly and dominated the first 15 minutes of the match, taking full opportunity of three goal scoring chances they had. Although the English girls fought back well and shared possession, playing a fast and intense game between the circles, they could not capitalise on the opportunities they created with their good defence and quick breakaways.
Despite the girls’ obvious disappointment after the defeat, head coach Sue Chandler thought her team played well and put in a gutsy determined effort that saw some good hockey played.

Goals from Reading’s Rebecca Dru and Belper’s Alice Sharp secured the bronze medal for England U18 girls at the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships in Belgium at the weekend.
The only goal of the first half came from the penalty spot courtesy of Dru, giving England a crucial half time lead in their final match of the tournament and when Sharp scored a well worked set piece move from a 49th minute penalty corner England put themselves well in control.
With ten minutes remaining, Belgium gave themselves hope of a comeback when Florence Deley scored a penalty corner but the English defence stayed resolute and held out for a 2-1 win and the bronze medal.
