Almost 200 young sports volunteers from across the country recently came together to participate in the Young Leaders Camp held at Bradfield College near Reading.
The three day event hosted by England Netball, Rugby Football Union, UK Athletics and English Gymnastics, offered fun and motivational activities to reward and engage with the sport enthusiasts.
Representing England Netball was national head coach, Sue Hawkins, who presented a session on the importance of warm up, movement, skills and drills and how to structure a coaching session. “Events like these are great as they engage with enthusiastic, likeminded people who share a passion for sport.
“The event detailed the role that a leader should take and the importance of presentation when delivering messages to young players. The event created a real buzz as the young volunteers were full of life and the type of people we want to be involved with netball,” said Sue.
One young volunteer who attended the residential sports camp was 17 year old Caroline Wilkins, she said: “Everyone should be a volunteer. Ever since I was little I’ve wanted to be a PE teacher, and volunteering is helping me on my way.
“Volunteering does take up a lot of your spare time, but when you see young people playing a sport that they love, it’s all worth it for me. I think if you want to work as a coach or as a teacher, it’s really worth volunteering.”
