ENGLAND under-16 girls earned the praise from team manager Jackie Sharp,
despite going down 2-1 to Germany in the first of their three-match series at
Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire on Thursday afternoon.
England lost out 4-0 to Germany at Easter, but looked much stronger in Thursday’s
clash.
“It was a much-improved performance from the last time we played the Germans in
Holland at Easter,” sand team manager Jackie Sharp.
“The girls played with high intensity, we got a lot of ball across the front of the girls,
and they are almost getting a touch on it. This is something we’re working hard on
in training, and it’s almost coming together.
“There was some solid defending and really it was a hugely improved performance
all round.”
Germany opened the scoring after five minutes when Beatrice Dechant scored
after breaking away and catching England on the back foot, but England levelled
on 16 minutes with Mel Wilkinson scoring with a good follow-up after her initial shot
had been saved.
Germany scored on the hour mark when a penalty corner was drag flicked into the
net by Laura Saenger, but England contained any further threat until the whistle
and will be aiming to secure a win when they next meet on Friday.
