Slough’s Lauren Penny took the plaudits by netting a hat-trick in their 3-1 victory over a depleted Bowdon Hightown. Penny opened the scoring after just 28 seconds thanks to Ashleigh Ball’s insightful cross field ball which Sally Walton equalised for Bowdon Hightown before half time. Penny’s two second half goals, however, secured the points for Slough and the result sees Slough move up two places to sixth and Hightown drop into the relegation play-off place. Sutton Coldfield moved up into seventh place as a result of their win over local rivals Cannock at Chase Park. Cannock has now gone half a season without a point and the signs look ominous as they sit 10 points adrift of safety. Vicky Woolford’s opener in the 19th minute for Sutton Coldfield was followed by goals in the second half from Jane Sixsmith and Celia Butler; indeed Woolford could have added her second in the 40th minute but squandered the penalty stroke chance afforded her. Jess Wood succeeded for Cannock where Woolford had failed in scoring from a penalty stroke in the 69th minute, it will have at least provided Cannock with a positive to end on, a team that fights to the end. Aileen Davis and Georgie Twigg’s goals earned victory for Clifton at University of Birmingham, their fifth of the season.
Reading’s Alex Danson struck a hat-trick to put her side in seventh heaven on Sunday as the Berkshire side ran out 7-0 winners over Olton & West Wawicks. Chantal De Bruijn, Jessica Brooker, Elizabeth Hunt and Rebecca Halle all chipped in during the victory with goals that brought their side’s tally for the season to 39. With a goal difference of +33 Reading’s is superior of the next best to teams by 24 goals. The balance is clearly right too; with the stingiest rear-guard conceding fewer than a goal a game, six in total. It was also the perfect response to their defeat by Leicester, increasing the gap between the two to seven points and resuming their winning mentality.
Surbiton’s consistent form paid off on Sunday in Investec Conference East as their 4-0 win at Harleston Magpies opened up a two point lead at the top. Chloe Strong’s brace led the way for Surbiton with Abi Robinson and Sandra Frankland completing the four goal haul. St. Albans, in second, lost ground on the leaders having been held to a surprise goalless draw at second bottom Old Loughtonians. It was an important result for Old Loughtonians as they compete for survival, currently two points behind safety. Sevenoaks moved to within two points of St. Albans following a 6-1 away win at bottom side Horsham in which Lucy Wood and Sarah Bolton both struck braces. Ipswich’s Hannah Martin scored the only goal, shortly before half time, against Maidstone to earn their fourth win of the season. Rounding off the Conference, Oxford Hawks enjoyed their fourth win of their first season in the Investec Women’s Hockey League to hit the mid-way stage in fifth place. Hawks’ saw off Chelmsford, at home, 3-1 with Takara Haines scoring a brace.
Beeston increased their goal difference advantage over Wakefield Bradford in Investec Conference North following a barn storming 10-0 victory over bottom side Northampton Saints. Saints have found their return to the national stage a challenging one, rooted to the foot of the table with nine straight defeats in which they have scored just four goals. Beeston’s change in fortunes since last season’s brush with relegation was evident when Eleanor Watton, Nikki Ward, Hannah Wraith, and Jo Hunter all scored braces in the victory. Wakefield Bradford’s 2-0 win over Whitley Bay and Tynemouth came reasonably late on as Cat Horn opened the scoring in the 58th minute and Gwen Smith added another with nine minutes remaining. Loughborough Students took bragging rights from their sporting rivalry with fellow student side Durham University with a 3-1 win. Phoebe Richards put Loughborough into the lead in the 11th minute which was maintained as a one goal lead at half time. Laura Unsworth and Rachel Malcolm put Loughborough three goals up with eight minutes remaining which rendered Sophie Davies’ last minute penalty strike for Durham a consolation. Brooklands Poynton overturned a goal deficit to run out 3-1 winners over Liverpool Sefton thanks to two goals in the last ten minutes from Lindsay Rachubka and Rebecca McGuiness. In the final game of the division Doncaster ran riot at Springfields as Abbie Brant struck twice to lead her side in scoring during a 7-0 triumph.
Buckingham’s unbeaten run in Investec Conference West ran to the first half of the season on Sunday following their eighth win. Exe travelled to Buckingham having lost to second placed Swansea last weekend and their travels to Stowe School were as fruitless, trailing to Katrina Nicholson’s goal at half time, they fell to a 4-0 defeat by full time after goals from Anita Bazini, Charlotte Bracken and Tracy Jones’ late strike. Swansea stays within striking distance of Buckingham after defeating bottom side Staines 4-1 at home. Sue O’Connell and and Jess Ross provided high points for the visiting side by scoring and saving a penalty stroke respectively. However, goals from Natalie Blythe, Sophie Clayton, Beth Fisher and Carys Hopkins – who atoned for her earlier penalty stroke miss with a last minute penalty stroke goal. Gloucester City’s impact on the conference this season sees the side – competing in their inaugural Investec Women’s Hockey League season – in third place in a tight division behind the top two. Kim Pullon scored twice for Gloucester City before Corinne Bury’s strike put their side three goals ahead, a margin that proved too great for Trojans for whom Charlotte Cox grabbed a goal late on. Firebrands and Barnes HE shared the spoils after goals from Lily Owsley and Georgie Field had overturned Laura Bridge’s opening strike for Barnes HE. Sarah Eastman’s strike for Barnes HE with thirteen minutes remaining saved a point for Barnes HE and the result that saw Firebrands lose ground in their bid to avoid relegation. Team Bath Buccaneers’ gained ground on Firebrands thanks to their 2-1 win over Isca University resulting from goals by Jessica Cremin and a late winner from Dani Black.
