Double delight for Ajdukovic as Torun make history

Having come so close to cementing a maiden victory in their opening game at Nadezhda Orenburg, the Polish newcomers got the job done at the second attempt with a thrilling 83-78 triumph against Agu Spor Kulubu.

Ajdukovic finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds to take her team to their landmark win on a memorable night for the club.

It left head coach Elmedin Omanic with a thirst for more victories in the weeks to come and hoping Torun can persuade even more supporters to cheer them on to greater success.

He said, "It was very hard to play against AGU Spor who apply a very strong rotation.

"We had to cope with a variable defence, but we were prepared for everything.

"I offer my congratulations to the girls, my thanks to the fans and I hope that for the next game, there will be even more of them."

The other debutantes this season are Dynamo Kursk, but the Russian rookies weren't able to take a first win after going down 77-62 in Krakow against Wisla Can-Pack.

USA forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike produced a monumental effort with 24 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to defeat the hosts.

The other big story of the night was consecutive losses for defending champions Galatasaray odeabank on their home court.

Turkey national team legend Nevriye Yilmaz returned to action to claim 19 points, but they left the door open for Good Angels Kosice to come roaring back in the final quarter and take a dramatic 68-67 win.

It was another veteran star in Zuzana Zirkova who handed the Slovak Republic side their first success of the campaign, nailing a triple with five seconds remaining to put Kosice in the lead. Polish swingman Magdalena Zietara then made the game safe with a last gasp block on Nuria Martinez.

Fresh from carrying the Opals to their third-place finish in Turkey, Erin Phillips returned to Istanbul and claimed a game high 20 points for the jubilant visitors.

"I'm excited for many reasons," smiled the guard afterwards.

"We won our first EuroLeague Women game this season.

"It was a very hard game and we beat the EuroLeague Women champions who also played well."

Elsewhere in the competition, rising star Astou Ndour underlined her potential with 19 points and nine boards as Fenerbahce strolled to an 85-52 success at BK Imos Brno.

There was another outstanding display under the hoop in Montpellier as Polish center Ewelina Kobryn harvested 21 points for UMMC Ekaterinburg as they beat the home team 74-58, with Valeriane Ayayi following up her 30-point effort in week one by adding 18 points in the defeat.

Finally, both Tango Bourges Basket and CB Avenida are still unbeaten after they claimed home wins against Beretta Famila Schio and Nadezhda respectively.
