Dominicans praying before the last point against Russia | TIJUANA, Mexico, August 1, 2007 - It was the first triumph in history for the Dominican volleyball against a major power as Russia. The Caribbeans defeated the Europeans 10-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 15-13 with Jeoselina Rodriguez scoring 29 points for the second night in a row.
Despite their triumph, the Dominicans still need to overcome the task of defeating Italy today in order to make the round of the top eight teams. A three-way tie with the Russians and the Italians would let them out because of their points-ratio. In Pool B, Brazil and Japan meet today to decide the top place in Pool C while Korea and Belgium will clash in a do-or-die match in Pool A. In the action of Day Two, Brazil crushed Puerto Rico 25-10, 25-10, 25-14 and Hiroko Matsuura contributed 25 points as Japan was a 14-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 winner over Germany, while in Pool A, Serbia defeated Belgium 29-27, 25-18, 25-19.
In the rest of the schedule: Korea breezed past Mexico 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 and Italy beat Peru 25-17, 25-12, 25-22. In Pool D, USA rolled over Tunisia 25-11, 25-11, 25-12. |
