San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Dominican Republic's Bethania De la Cruz has established a new record of serving aces in the Puerto Rican Women's Superior League.
Playing for her Caguas team, De la Cruz posted four aces among her 22 points in the 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23 victory over Mayaguez last Wednesday and in the process surpassed the old mark of 50 set by Puerto Rico's Elaine Lopez in 1995.
The powerful outside hitter then extended her record to 56 by scoring five more aces in her next outing, a 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Ponce two days later when she finished with 18 points.
De la Cruz, who is the league's leading scorer 384 points from 76 sets played, is a strong candidate to win the Most Valuable Player award for the regular season. Her Caguas side have secured first place in the standings with a 19-2 record with one more match to play before the start of the play-offs.
