HAVANA (FIBA Americas Championship for Women) - Cuba are to travel to Spain and play a series of friendly games as part of their preparations for September’s FIBA Americas Championship for Women in Brazil.
Alberto Zabala’s team, which narrowly missed out on a place at the Beijing Games when they lost to Brazil in the last game of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women in Madrid, will leave for Europe next week.
They will play in a triangular tournament in Ferrol that also includes Spain and world champions Australia from May 15-17.
Cuba will then play friendly encounters from May 18-24 against teams from Navarre, the Basque Country and Barcelona.
Zabala’s unit will go up against Portugal on May 26 and 28 and they will face the Spain women one last time in Vigo on May 30.
Three places for the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women are on offer at the FIBA Americas Championship.
Team USA qualified directly by winning last year’s Olympic gold medal.
