Costa Rica open with impressive victory



Panama players celebrate after their second victory in two days at the XVI Central American Cup
Panama City, Panama, November 29, 2010 – Defending champions Costa Rica began the pursuit of a 10th consecutive title by defeating Belize 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-13) on the second day of action at the XVI Women's Central American Cup on Monday.


Verania Willis and Karen Cope led the scoring for Costa Rica with 16 and 10 points respectively in a match that lasted only 55 minutes. Meanwhile, Panama beat Nicaragua 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-18) to record their second victory in as many days and Guatemala survived a close first set to defeat Honduras 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-14).


Joanna Arroyo and Jenny Madrid each scored 13 points in Panama's victory while Katherine Taju added 10. Three Nicaragua players – Lollette Rodriguez, Amalia Hernandez and Claudia Noguera – finished with seven points apiece.


Susana Alvarado was the main offensive weapon for Guatemala against Honduras with 16 points while Ruth Gomez and Blanca Recinos each contributed 13 points. Honduras's best attacker was Maria Fernanda Rodriguez who had eight tallies.


In Tuesday's matches, Guatemala (1-1) take on El Salvador (1-0), Costa Rica (1-0) square off against Nicaragua (1-1) and Panama (2-0) entertain Honduras (0-2).
