The Route Organisation-sponsored Cheshire Women failed to follow up their excellent opening day win as they were well beaten by a strong Yorkshire side in Leeds.
Yorkshire new ball pair Robyn Chylde and World Cup star Katherine Brunt both struck early as they made the most of helpful seaming conditions, with Brunt conceding only three from six overs in her first spell.
Thereafter Cheshire often threatened to kickstart their innings, but lost wickets at crucial stages. Lauren Griffiths’ 31, Laura Newton’s 21 and Kate Skelhorn’s late cameo of 17 not out were the only significant contributions.
Dawn Prestidge gave Cheshire brief hope with a wicket in the first over of the reply, but when number three batsman Danielle Hazell sweetly drove her first ball for four, things did not bode well for Cheshire.
Further wickets for Prestidge and Natalie Heap followed, and at 58-3 Hazell had scored 43 of the Yorkshire runs to date. After two early scares, Brunt moved up a gear, and her 28 not out saw her side home in partnership with Hazell inside 22 overs. Hazell remained dominant to the last, finishing unbeaten on 75 from 66 deliveries with ten fours and two sixes.
Improvement will be required in several areas, especially the fielding, before Cheshire clash with Lancashire in their next match on Sunday May 24 at Alvanley.
