OTTAWA – The Canadian Open Synchronized Swimming Championships wrapped up Sunday afternoon.
The four-day event at the Peps, Universite Laval in Quebec City, QC, featured over 140 of Canada’s top junior and senior (Tier 7) swimmers from across the country.
The final day featured the Junior Duet Finals and the Senior Duet Free routine as well as performance by the 2009 Canadian World Championship Synchro Team.
Montreal Synchro’s Emilia Kopcik was one of the events most successful athletes and she rode the momentum right into the final event.
Kopcik and duet partner Annabelle Frappier won gold in the junior duet as they posted a final score of 81.812. Toronto’s Granite Synchro Club duet of Rachel Kowalski and Rebecca Maule had a final score of 81.222 and Synchro Elite’s Anne-Marie Vezina and Marie Rondeau were third with a score of 79.837.
In the Senior Duet Free routine it was the international entry from Brazil that stole first-place honours as Lara Teixeira and Nayara Figueira posted a final score of 89.333. The top Canadian duet was the Calgary Aquabelles Emily Brooks and Rosilyn Tegart with a score of 84.417 followed by the Quebec duet of Brigitte Desrosiers and Monika Wittner from the Dollard Synchro Club who had a final score of 79.833.
The event was a huge success on all fronts as the athletes were at their best, the volunteers worked diligently and the organizers were to be commended.
