BRITISH TAEKWONDO TEAM HEADS TO BEIJING FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH HIGH HOPES

The Great Britain Taekwondo Team will soon head to Beijing to compete in the 2007 WTF World Taekwondo Championships, taking place from 18th – 22nd May 2007. This event is the biggest in world taekwondo outside of the Olympics and runs on alternate years. The last event was held in Madrid in 2005 where 748 athletes competed for 114 countries over five days. Great Britain’s Sarah Stevenson came away with a silver medal last time around and will be looking to go one better this year as she hopes to win gold - the perfect preparation for next year’s Olympic Games, also to be held in the Chinese capital.

The ten-strong British Team is packed full of exciting world-class talent including Mansfield-born Tyrone Robinson, who recently took a senior gold medal at the 2007 Dutch Open, and Londoner Craig Brown who won another senior gold at the 2007 German Open. British competitors will compete in a variety of weight categories and will also be well represented at junior level by sixteen year-old Stella Whitehead. Whitehead won a bronze medal at the Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney back in January this year and will go to Beijing with the confidence that could lead her to Championship glory.

Gary Hall, Performance Director for the BTCB Sport Taekwondo UK Ltd, who assumes overall coaching and selection responsibility for the Team, commented: “The Great Britain Team has never been in better shape after the recent move to our new facilities at Sportcity in Manchester. The 2007 WTF World Taekwondo Championships will act as a fascinating test to see how far our group has come and I am confident that we will be more than able to match the best players in the world. Obviously qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games is of paramount importance but the Team will be fully focused on putting in a first-rate performance and is in a buoyant mood after its recent successes.”
