LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, September 7, 2008 - Brazilians won gold medals on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Sunday as the Salgodo sisters joined their brother on the top of international Beach Volleyball podiums in Poland and Mallorca after defeating teams from Germany. Carolina and Maria Clara Salgado join their mother (Isabel) and brother (Pedro) as gold medal winners on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour as the Brazilian sisters won the Polish stop in Myslowice. Brother Pedro followed his sisters to the top of the podium on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca by teaming with Harley Marques to capture a FIVB gold medal. The two SWATCH FIVB World Tour events were be held at the same time as the 2008 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships in England on Brighton Beach where teams from Italy and the Netherlands captured the gold medals for players under the age of 21. The finals for both SWATCH FIVB World Tour events saw with the winning teams sharing the $28,000 first-place prizes. While the women’s competition featured only the medal matches in Myslowice, the men’s ”final four” contests were staged Sunday at the Plaza de Toros in Palma de Mallorca. In Myslowice, the fourth-seeded Salgado sisters defeated seventh-seeded Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany 21-17, 19-21 and 15-7 in the 56-minute gold medal match. While their brother has now won eight SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medals, the Salgado’s mother claimed a 1994 international Beach Volleyball title in 1994 with Roseli Timm on South Beach in Miami. In the bronze medal match, fifth-seeded Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen of Norway scored In Mallorca, the third-seeded Harley and Salgado defeated eighth-seeded compatriots Benjamin Insfran and Franco Neto 21-18 and 21-17 in 47 minutes to advance to the finals were the Brazilians posted a 21-18 and 21-18 win in 42 minutes over David Klemperer and Eric Koreng. The second-seeded Klemperer and Koreng advanced to the gold medal match with a 21-16, 19-21 and 21-19 win in 68 minutes over fourth-seeded Jonas Reckermann and Mischa Urbatzka in an All-German semi-final match. For the bronze medal, Benjamin and Franco out-lasted Reckermann and Urbatzka 17-21, 25-23 and 15-13 in 75 minutes.
The 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar concludes with double gender events in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai, October 5-11) and China (Sanya, November 10-16). Single gender events will also be staged in Bahrain for men (Manama, October 27-November 1) and Thailand for women (Phuket, November 4-9). |
